Zu-A-Schmitt-Aristoteles-Poetik [gekürzte Fassung in: Forum Classicum 53 (2010), 49-51]
Aristoteles – Poetik: übersetzt und erläutert von Arbogast Schmitt. Akademie-Verlag Berlin 2008 [Aristoteles – Werke in deutscher Übersetzung, Bd. 5], 789 S., EUR 98,00 (ISBN 978-3-05-004430-9).
Mit dieser von Neuem ins Deutsche übersetzten1 und umfassend kommentierten Ausgabe der Poetik-Vorlesung des Aristoteles stellt der Marburger (inzwischen) Emeritus Arbogast Schmitt (Sch.) auf eindrucksvolle Weise im Rahmen der von E. Grumach begründeten und H. Flashar herausgegeben Reihe dessen umfangreicherer Redekunst2 die zweite, wohl ältere (um 335 v. Chr.) und von Beginn an nicht selten mißverstandene literaturtheoretische Lehrschrift3 über Tragödie und Epos sowie (verloren) Jambos und Komödie zur Seite. Sch.s Opus grande baut sich in folgenden Teilen auf:
Textgeschichte (Th. Busch, XVII-XXVI) und Übersetzung (3-41). Einleitende Kapitel: Schwierigkeiten im Zugang (seit der Renaissance) und geistesgeschichtliche Bedingungen der ‚Wiederentdeckung‘ der Poetik (45-54), Abwendung von Aristoteles in den hellenistischen Schulen und ihre Folgen für das Literaturverständnis (55-71), der systematische Ort der Dichtung unter den psychischen Aktivitäten des Menschen bei A. (71-91), Theoria, Praxis, Poesis – die Zuordnung der Dichtung zur Theoria bei A. und in den arabischen Poetik-Kommentaren (92-117), Mimesis einer Handlung: konkrete Verwirklichung des allgemeinen Könnens eines Charakters – ‚Mythos‘: Mimesis einer vollständig ausgeführten Handlung als Inbegriff des Dichterischen (117-125) und (zusammenfassend) Ableitung der Dichtung aus einer anthropologischen Reflexion auf die Vermögen des Menschen (126-128). Argumentationsgang und Inhalt der Poetik (128-135), ein Literaturverzeichnis mit modernen Editionen, Übersetzungen, Kommentaren und Bibliographien, mit antiken, mittelalterlichen wie Renaissancetexten, mit neuzeitlicher Primär- und Sekundärliteratur (139-191) leiten über zum eigentlichen, knapp 550 Seiten starken Kommentar (195-742). Ein Anhang bietet Sach-, Stellen- und Personenindices (745-768), führt das Inhaltsverzeichnis nach Sachpunkten weiter aus (770 ff.)4 und gibt abschließend eine thematische, nach den Kapiteln der Poetik und darin jeweils <A. Gliederung und Zielsetzung> und <B. Einzelerklärung und Forschungsprobleme> in die Paragraphen gegliederte Übersicht des Kommentars (773-789).
Die Übersetzung ist erklärtermaßen texttreu, andererseits bereits eine hilfreich erklärende: durchgängig finden sich – auch für den vom griechischen Original herkommenden Leser – Verständnis vorbereitende und fördernde Zusätze (stets durch eckige Klammern markiert – Sch. p. XV), und gewisse Freiheiten mit der Vorlage erlauben Verständnisvarianten im Detail5.
Der Kommentar erschließt diese Vorlesung, indem zunächst der ‚rote Faden‘ durch das jeweilige Kapitel hin verfolgt wird (A.), die Einzelaussagen sodann (B.) im Rahmen der aristotelischen wie nacharistotelischen Literaturtheorie und Rezeptionsgeschichte gedeutet werden; stellvertretend hier zu Kernaussagen:
Am Beginn der frühen Neuzeit setzt mit der Wiederentdeckung des Aristoteles in der Renaissance eine poetologische Tradition ein, welche die Nachahmung (Mímēsis) der Natur als etwas per se Schönem und Wohlgeordnetem zur Regel erhebt – so formuliert etwa in Joh. Chr. Gottscheds Versuch einer kritischen Dichtkunst 1730 (I c. 3, § 20) – und damit der freien Entfaltung des künstlerischen Genies ein Ordnungswerk von außerhalb seiner selbst überstreift: Die Zurückweisung dieses „Nachahmungsgeistes“ ist ein schon in Kants Kritik der Urteilskraft 1790 (§ 47) erhobenes ‚genieästhetisches‘ Postulat der Moderne, indes: auf Aristoteles läßt sich für Sch. eine solche am Muster der Natur orientierte Regelpoetik, rein normativ oder rein deskriptiv, überhaupt nicht zurückführen (202 f., 552); den seit der Mitte des 18. Jh. gepflegten romantischen, aber schon bei Horaz (Ars 99-113) und Ps.-Longin (15, 1 f.) angelegten Gegensatz von ‚rational-methodisch‘ (und damit kunstfremd) und ‚genial‘ (entfesselt und wahrhaft künstlerisch) vermeide Aristoteles, indem er Literatur zwar von beweisführender Wissenschaft abgrenze (1447 b 16-20), nicht aber dem rein Gefühlsmäßig-Intuitiven zuweise. Dieser führt den Nachahmungsbegriff bereits im Eingangskapitel der Poetik ein, um vielmehr – wie Platon (Sch. 209) – anhand des Mediums, in welchem eine solche (lautliche) Nachahmung erfolgt (in der Literatur: Rhythmus, Sprachgestalt und Harmonie), anhand des behandelten Stoffes (für Poesie stets ‚Mythen‘) sowie anhand des Darstellungsmodus als konstitutiver Bedingungen einer jeden Nachahmung zwischen den literarischen Künsten, insbes. den dichterischen Gattungen zu unterscheiden (1447 a 13-23 als Programm der ersten 3 cap.). So bildet der Historiograph (mehr oder minder) aktuelle Einzelgeschehnisse in ihrem pragmatischen Ablauf nacherzählend ab (c. 9), während der Dichter als Nachahmung allgemeingesetzliche Handlungen darstellt, welche einer inneren Stimmigkeit von Wesenstypen oder Situationen verpflichtet sind und nicht an objektiver Realität hängen (Sch. p. X; 204 ff., 225, 241, 267) – und Poesie darum philosophischer nachahmt als Geschichtsschreibung (poet. 1451 b 4-6).
Dies unterscheidet sie auch vom Verdikt der Nachahmung von Nachgeahmtem (Idee – Realität in der Welt – Darstellung), mit welchem Platon die Künstler allgemein, die Dichter insbesondere im zehnten Buch der Politeia aus seinem idealen Gemeinwesen bannt (hier 598 d 7 – 601 b 8)6. Für Aristoteles werden die transzendenten Ideen immanent vollzogen, indem der je einzelne, materiale Typos die (von Ideenseite) in ihn gelegten formalen Möglichkeiten und Folgerichtigkeiten ausführt; die Idee wird zur Entelechie, sie trägt gewissermaßen ihre Verwirklichung in sich – diese ahmt der Künstler nach und nimmt so die Wahrheitsstufe des platonischen Handwerkers ein7. Dabei ist es nicht allein die dichterische Form, etwa die Versgestalt, welche Dichtung ausmacht, sondern ihr poetischer Gegenstand – weswegen Empedokles trotz Hexameter eben Naturphilosoph bleibt (poet. 1447 b 17-20; Sch. 196, 208, 218 f.) und Herodot auch durch Umsetzung in Versmaß kein Dichter wird (poet. 1451 b 1-3; Sch. 373, 387 f.).
Von grundsätzlicher Bedeutung für einen weiteren Schlüsselbegriff, die Kátharsis – ihr sind zwei umfangreiche Exkurse gewidmet (333-348 und 476-510) – ist in der Tragödiendefinition c. 6 (poet. 1449 b 27 f.) Sch.s Wiedergabe (mit Lessing, Hamburgische Dramaturgie 78 und gegen u.a. Gigon, Fuhrmann und Flashar8) der kátharsis tōn toioútōn pathemátōn = eléou kai phóbou nicht im (medizinischen) Sinne eines Genitivus separativus als Reinigung von derartigen Gefühlen = Mitleid und Furcht, sondern im Sinne eines ebendiese Gefühle ihrerseits zum Rationalen (Lessing: zum Tugendhaften) hin reinigenden Genitivus obiectivus (Sch. 9; 333; 478)9. Die Erregung dieser Gemütszustände – éleos und phóbos – im Zuschauer auf die beste Weise ist Ziel der tragischen Handlung (c. 13) und diese wiederum Nachahmung, Mímēsis einer vollständigen, sich gemäß innerer Wahrscheinlichkeit, Zielsetzung oder Notwendigkeit eines bestimmten Charakters folgerichtig ergebenden und damit erst ihre Einheit wahrenden Handlung (c. 9, 1451 a 37 f. und b 8 f., 1452 a 2 f.)10 – in diesem Sinne versteht Aristoteles Mímēsis und nicht als Nachahmung der Natur mit zudem moralisch-lehrhaftem Impetus (Sch. 199, 410 f., 440 f.). Bloße Kopie einer geschehenen Wirklichkeit macht für Aristoteles – wie für Platon – noch keine Literatur aus; diese muß Wirklichkeit aus ihren Ermöglichungsgründen darstellen (Sch. 208, 741 f.), läßt das eigentümliche Potential eines Individuums sich in seinem Handeln verwirklichen11, und ihre vollendete Form findet dichterische Mímēsis in einem gut komponierten Mythos (Sch. 202, 222).
Der tragische Held, dessen Verfehlung (Hamartía) – mittelbar – aus Charakterschwäche, in Unfreiwilligkeit und Unwissenheit (durch Versagen der diánoia), nicht aber aus Boshaftigkeit ihn die Situation falsch einschätzen und scheitern läßt, ihn somit aus mangelnder Einsicht ins Unglück stürzt, steht in der Mitte (→ Mesótēslehre) zwischen dem epieikés (dem völlig Integren) und dem mochthērós (dem ganz und gar Verkommenen), und nur sein Fall ist geeignet, éleos und phóbos beim Zuschauer zu wecken (c. 13, 1453 a 7-12)12. Tragische Hamartía, im Zuge derer ein an sich guter Charakter veranlaßt wird, sein Handlungsziel zu verfehlen oder sich eines zu setzen, durch welches er das für ihn wirklich Gute übergeht (487), verdeutlicht Sch. mittels ihrer Abgrenzung gegenüber ebendiesen beiden Typen (444-456). Im angemessenen Mitempfinden – nicht der nur rührseligen Gefühligkeit noch in nicht berechtigtem Mitgefühl (493) – eines tragischen Handlungsverlaufs und unverdienten Leides eines Unsergleichen erfüllt die Tragödie ihre Aufgabe auch am Zuschauer, ohne daß dieser sich allerdings – entgegen neueren Auffassungen – mit Jenem identifizieren solle13, als Katharsis, als Reinigung der ihr zukommenden, von ihr selbst erzeugten und abschließend geformten Gefühle des ‚Mitleids und der Furcht‘ (478 f.) angesichts eines Scheiterns, das als mögliche Gefahr auch für den Zuschauer selbst aufgefaßt werden kann: dem entspricht bei Aristoteles ein reflektierter Begriff von Katharsis als „Kultur des Gefühls“, welcher von nachromantischem Verständnis im Sinne irrationaler, psychosomatischer Erregungen der Elementaraffekte ‚Jammer und Schaudern‘ frei ist (Sch. 486 ff.).
Am Beispiel eben der Gefühls- oder Affektenlehre (páthē) zur Darstellung nachempfind- und verstehbarer Handlungsmotivationen von – dem Zuschauer gleichen – Menschen im Drama zeigt Sch. auch (333), wie Schlüsselbegriffe dieser kleinen Schrift durchweg den Kontext des Gesamtwerkes (hier: der Ethiken, De anima) voraussetzen, ohne Einzelnes eigens nochmals zu erarbeiten. So ist etwa die Einheit von emotionaler und bewußter Intelligenz in der Rhetorik (1378 a 19 – 1388 b 30)14 ausgearbeitet durch eine Auffassung von Kognition, welche im rational urteilenden wie gefühlsmäßig wertenden Menschen nur je unterschiedlich wirksam wird: Aristoteles und die Trennung von Denken, Fühlen, Wollen seit dem 18. Jahrhundert (334 f.). Mitleid und Furcht werden – neben der Rhetorik – in der Nikomachischen Ethik15 besprochen, die dazu das platonische (Polit. 533 d 2) ‚Auge der Seele‘ verständiger Menschen mit aufnimmt (Sch. 483-486). Von daher muß die Poetik auch nicht zu allen Fragestellungen hin abgeschlossen sein, da sie ihrerseits eingebettet ist und als Teil des Lehrgebäudes andere bedingen oder ihrerseits zur Bedingung haben kann.
Tṓi páthei máthos – … und (allerdings nur !) Letzteres gilt auch für die Arbeit mit und an Sch.s monumentalem Kommentarwerk: Summe und Ertrag dieser überreichen Darstellung und Analyse der aristotelischen Dichtungstheorie, mit welcher diese Disziplin seinerzeit überhaupt erst einsetzte, konnten hier naturgemäß nur exemplarisch angedeutet werden; sie bleiben für alle weitere Auseinandersetzung mit literarischer Rhetorik und Poetik maßgebend.
